Joe Bergen is a musician, educator, and arts administrator whose work focuses on creating and developing music communities from the ground up. Joe is best known as a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of Mantra Percussion, Inc., a multifaceted performing arts organization based in the New York Metro Area. Over the last 10 years, Mantra has carved a unique place in both contemporary music as well as education through collaborating with living composers, residencies with higher education institutions and cultural centers, national and international tours, and supporting the next generation of musicians at all stages of development through their tuition-free education and development initiatives.

In this episode, we talk to percussionist and music educator Joe Bergen about the importance of exploring and expanding the new music repertoire. Joe walks us through his journey in forming Mantra Percussion, a group that both performs and provides students with opportunities to enter the world of new music. We also share our experiences with being exposed to contemporary music at a young age and how that exposure diversified our understanding of music.
